This dataset contains the point-transect distance sampling records of Hawaii Akepa collected at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge between 1987 and 2017. These data include the survey point locations, observer details, time of day, and sampling conditions during the counts. In addition, the data include the elevation and alliance level habitat classification at the survey points.

Customer / Agency In 1985 the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge was established to protect native Hawaiian forest birds and their rain forest habitat. Located on the eastern slope of Mauna Kea, the 33,000-acre refuge supports a diverse array of native plants and birds. Many species are rare and endangered, including several colorful Hawaiian honeycreepers: the akiapolaau, Hawaii akepa and Hawaii creeper. The rare and endangered ‘akiapōlā‘au occurs in only a few areas of upper elevation koa/‘ōhi‘a forest on the Big Island. The ‘akiapōlā‘au feeds on insects and caterpillars living in the wood and under the bark of koa trees.

Hakalau Forest encompasses 32,733 acres and is located on the windward slope of Mauna Kea supporting a variety of endemic species of plants and birds.
